BANGALORE: The Public Affairs Centre (PAC) along with grassroot level organisations such as the Centre for Advocacy and Research (CFAR), Society for People’s Action for Development(SPAD) and Association for Promoting Social Action (APSA), has created an effective citizen engagement model to help improve the quality of service at BBMP’s maternity homes. At a press conference on Thursday, Sudha K, Project Coordinator of Centre for Advocacy and Research (CFAR), said, “The Board of Visitors (BoV) which is supposed to monitor the functioning of BBMP hospitals functions just like a rubber stamp at the referral hospital level.” The team had conducted surveys at BBMP maternity homes in Bangalore and this lead to the formation of Maternity Home Monitoring Committee (MHMC) at the catchment areas of three maternity homes in the city, Gavipuram Guttahalli, Cox Town and Nandini Layout. The MHMC members are mostly  poor women from urban areas, who are users of the maternity homes, she said.During the assessment, it was found that maternity home at Nandini Layout had no drinking water facility nor any required infrastructure for delivery of service. After six months of follow up, the MHMC brought considerable changes in the functioning of the maternity homes. Drinking water facility is now available at the maternity home at Nandini layout, Sudha stated.
