BHUBANESWAR: On October 24, the PCR van under the Modern Control Room of Bhubaneswar Cuttack Commissionerate police spotted a five year-old girl Gelhi moving around in Badagada area all alone. They picked her up and found she had been separated from her mother Jamuna. The baby girl was immediately shifted to the Ruchika Helpline and taken care of until her mother was traced. Both mother and child were then reunited. Two days later, one Sabita Dehuri of Banki in Cuttack was spotted while trying to discard her six month-old baby boy near Kalpana Square. The PCR van moving in the zone took her in and prevented the unfortunate incident. Both the mother and the infant were rescued and sheltered at a local club. Incidents like these have come to the fore during the review of Commissioner BK Sharma on the functioning of the Modern Police Control Room established by police to effect quick response and immediate assistance to the needy in the Capital City. The control room has received more than 1,572 calls on an average daily. The average time taken by the PCR vans to reach the spot has been five minutes. In October, as many as 280 people, injured in accidents or other mishaps have been attended to and taken to hospitals. Serious law and order problems were prevented owing to casualties in road accidents due to swift intervention of the vans. According to figures given by the Control room, 33 destitute and distressed persons including women and children, were rescued from the roads and shifted to shelter homes. About four persons, attempting suicide, were also saved. Even 11 animals were rescued, treated and handed over to Nandankanan Zoo. Timely swoop after information from the control room has resulted in apprehending about 351 miscreants during the month while 65 thieves were caught red-handed.
