CHENNAI: The State health department has made elaborate arrangements for the second phase of pulse polio campaign which begins today. During the first phase conducted in February, over 70 lakh children were given polio drops.Around 40,000 immunisation booths have been set up in Primary Health Centres, health sub-centres, anganwadi centres, government hospitals, medical college hospitals, schools and other important places.In addition to the regular booths, 1,000 transit booths will be functioning in bus stands, railway stations and airports to cover children on transit. These booths will function round the clock for three days in shifts. Around 900 mobile teams have been formed to cover remote and inaccessible areas. The booths will function from 7 am to 5 pm. About 2 lakhs personnel are participating in this campaign.Meanwhile, it’s learnt that there has been no fresh polio case in India in the past one year. Tamil Nadu has not reported any polio case for the past eight years.Besides government departments, NGOs like Rotary, Indian Medical Association, Indian Academy of Paediatrics and Lions Club are also involved.
