KANNUR: Visits of CPM leaders to the Kannur Central Prison have been evoking a lot of public curiosity  against the backdrop of the arrests of an array of  leaders in connection with the murders of T P Chandrasekharan at Onchiyam, Shukkoor at Pattuvam and Fasal at Thalassery. The latest VIP visitor to the prison here on Friday was  none other than CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.  The visit of district secretary P Jayarajan with some of his party colleagues on Tuesday and Wednesday had kicked up a ruckus when an unconfirmed report came out stating that they had met some of the CPM prisoners individually. Jayarajan denied this later and so did the jail authorities.None of the CPM men arrested in connection with the TP murder case are housed in the jail here although there are several CPM activists undergoing imprisonment. The visits of the CPM leaders to the jail had an ostensible reason; to see the workers of the Adivasi Kshema Samithi (AKS) from Wayanad lodged in the jail here following their involvement in the land stir. The allegation of the CPM leaders was that the AKS activists were being denied even basic facilities in the jail.“More than 150 adivasis are kept in the jail. It is cruel to keep them inside the jail as there is no one to take care of their children. The government should release them immediately absolving them of all the charges,” said Pinarayi after visiting the jail.Meanwhile, Pinarayi’s jail visit resulted in an altercation between a section of mediapersons and the jail authorities supported by the police. The mediapersons including cameramen of TV channels were allowed to enter the jail during the visit of Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan last week, and this had given the public a glimpse of what had been happening inside the jail. This time, they were not allowed to stand anywhere near the entrance of the jail. The CPM leaders had complained that the mediapersons were taken inside the jail and allowed to take photographs in violation of the prevailing regulations by Thiruvanchoor, ignoring the fact that the Home Minister who is in charge of the jail portfolio has the prerogative to take decisions in this regard.
