CHENNAI: “The state government should set up dialysis centres at its all taluk hospitals.” This appeal was made by Dr P Soundararajan, prof and head of the department, Sri Ramachandra University (SRU). Addressing a gathering during an awareness camp organised by the Nephrology Department of SRU, Soundararajan said, “Though about 1.15 lakh people in the country annually gets affected by kidney-related diseases, only 10,000 are able to get their kidney transplants and further follow-ups due to exorbitant cost factor.” Since the patients need to shell out huge money for their regular dialysis, the state government should set up free dialysis centres in all taluk hospitals, he felt.After inaugurating the camp, PWC Davidar, Commissioner of Chennai Corporation, exhorted people to do regular exercise to prevent kidney ailments and other diseases. He advised people to start fitness groups in their locality so that it became a mass movement.Speaking on the occasion Dr.K V Somasundaram, Dean of Faculties, SRU, said that some basic regular checks like BP, blood sugar, salt and cholesterol could help avoid major diseases.Dr P Kuganantham, City Health Officer, thanked the university for helping the civic body in providing dialysis to the poor. Besides, World Kidney Day awareness programmes were held at different hospitals, including Madras Medical College and Rajiv Gandhi Govt General Hospital, Tanker Foundation, Suraksha Dialysis Centre, Trust Hospital and MIOT Hospital.
