New Delhi: The Congress held a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the political situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the backdrop of its strained relationship with coalition partner People's Democratic Party.
The three-hour meeting, attended by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, discussed the situation that has arisen since the PDP started distancing itself from the government by not attending two successive cabinet meetings.
Though there was no official comment from any of the leaders, sources said the Congress favoured exploring all political measures to salvage the coalition but made it clear that this should not be seen as a sign of weakness.
The meeting also deliberated options available to the Congress if the PDP, which has 17 MLAs in the state assembly, decided to withdraw support to the four-and-half-year-old coalition government, they said.
