New Delhi: Concerned at the growing uneven sex ratio in the country, Union Minister Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said there will be a day when men will have no girls to marry and they may have to turn "gay".
"The day is not far when there will be no girls to marry and we'll all become gays. That might happen," he said, while trying to drive home the point that there should be no threat to girl child.
Addressing the 'India Water Forum 2011' in New Delhi in the presence of Vice-President Hamid Ansari and his cabinet colleague Salman Khurshid, Abdullah said the number of males are growing and women are getting "eliminated".
Abdullah, known for his forthright views, was referring to the sharp rise in population and fast depletion of water resources in the country.
In 2001, there were 927 female children aged 0-six years for every 1,000 male children of the same age. In 2011, this dropped to 914 females for every 1,000 males, according to the provisional results of "Census 2011".
Apparently embarrassed by Abdullah's tongue in cheek remarks, Congress said it would not like to dignify it with an answer.
"Keeping in mind the kind of question that you have asked and the person who you have mentioned and his talent and dignity, I would not like to dignify it with a response," partry spokesperson Manish Tewari said.
He, at the same time, shared Abdullah's concerns with the declining sex ratio saying it was a serious issue on which the society should contemplate.
Tewari said that some of the areas even in the national capital like New Delhi and West Delhi the poor percentage of female sex was equal to some of the most backward districts of Punjab and Haryana, which was a matter of concern.
