KOCHI: Excise Minister K Babu has called for a proactive attitude to solve the drinking water crisis. He was speaking at a meeting convened to decide on the steps to be taken to tackle the drinking water scarcity and drought in the district.When people’s representatives demand a solution, the officials concerned should not block it citing technical problems, the Minister said.In the worst-hit areas, water will be distributed in tankers and through various canals under the Irrigation Department. Funds would be allotted from the MLA’s funds, he said. At the meeting, District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said that water available in quarries would be utilised using ‘reverse osmosis’ technology. If the pilot project is found to be successful, it can be extended to other parts of the district, the Collector said.Benny Behanan MLA has sought the removal of the old primo pipes laid at Samskara junction on the Thammanam-Palarivattom Road. Water distribution through canal is ideal for Angamaly and nearby areas, said Jose Thettayil MLA.Hibi Eden MLA has pointed out that pot-able water shortage has turned acute in Cheranalloor, Konthuruthy and Thevara. “Though funds have been allotted for pipe-laying work in Cheranalloor, work is yet to take off,” he said. Officials of the Kerala Water Authority, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and Departments of Revenue, Irrigation and Ground Water were present.
