CHENNAI: After weeks of deliberations, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) on Saturday formally announced a 2-hour power cut for Chennai, power holiday for industries and reduction in power cut for districts. In an official release here, TANGEDCO said effective 27 February, all industrial and commercial consumers will face a 40 per cent power cut and 2-hour load shedding in Chennai city and suburban areas. In a welcome step, the districts, including rural and urban areas, which have been reeling under unscheduled cuts, anywhere between 6 and 11 hours, will now face a 4-hour load shedding.Commercial consumers will face evening peak hour (6 pm to 10 pm) restriction and industries should prepare for a power holiday, effective March 1.These restriction and control (R&C) measures will be implemented according to local needs and suitably modified whenever required. Load shedding measures will be revised, depending on the demand-supply gap. “Steps will be taken to ensure uninterrupted supply to the extent possible in view of the needs of students preparing for exams,” the release said Details of timings of load shedding will be announced by regional chief engineers.Consumers can hope for some relaxation by June, when wind generation is expected to gain momentum, and certain power generation projects are commissioned.A 40 per cent cut means that industries should draw 40 per cent less power of their normal usage or entitlement. During evening peak hour restrictions (6 pm to 9 pm) only 10 per cent of the normal entitlement would be supplied for general illumination purposes, and not for production.
