HYDERABAD: The APTransco has drawn up a programme to augment power supply to various sectors in the next 20 years with an investment of Rs 14,000 crore.APTransco chairman and managing director Ajay Jain, after unfurling the national flag at his office here on Monday on the occasion of Independence Day, said the programme includes setting up of additional sub-stations both under APTransco and Discoms in the state. “For sub-stations under the control of the AP Transco investment would be of the order of Rs 6,000 crore and for those under Discoms, it would be Rs 8,000 crore," he said. Ajay Jain said for increase in GDP, the growth in power sector should be at least 12 per cent year on year.He said the power utilisation in the state was also on the rise. "During the recent rabi, power utilisation went up to 267 million units which was an all-time record and demand touched 11,829 mw," he said, adding: "Because we could supply power for seven hours to the farm sector, food grain production had reached 140 lakh tonnes."Last year, power supply was given to 1.4 lakh agriculture pumpsets and this year too the target was another 1.4 lakh wells, he said. Ajay Jain said that industrial sector was not neglected. Except for some regulation during rabi, power utilities were able to supply power to the sector round the clock.Admitting that lack of rainfall and shortage in supply of coal and gas were acting as a drag on power generation and supply, he said the APTransco was making sincere efforts to overcome the problem. He said a mechanism has been put in place to repair transformers that supply power to the farm sector within 24 hours in towns and within 48 hours in villages. This apart, the AP Transco had not gone back on its commitment to energise the tribal areas. Those who attended the ID celebrations included APGenco managing director Vijayanand, joint managing directors Ramesh, Umesh Shroff, Ranganatham and Prabhakara Rao.One Lakh TransformersA part of the proposed investment would be used to install one lakh distribution transformers (DTRS) every year in the next four years to resolve the low voltage and malfunctioning of transformers during the Kharif and Rabi seasons. The energy department will conduct a brainstorming session for officials of the power sector on August 16 to chalk out a strategy and sustainable programme for effective implementation of the five-point programme— (a) to improve power generation to bridge the gap between demand and supply (b) to strengthen the T&D network (c) reduce T&D losses (d) to promote saving of energy in a big way (e) refocus on consumer initiatives. As part of the proposed investment of Rs 6,000 crore on transmission projects, following installations will be taken up in the next four years. They are four substations of 400 kv, 37 of 220 kv and 125 of 132 kv — all totaling 7,000 CKM (circuit km) of EHT (extra high tension) lines all over the state. As part of the proposed distribution infrastructure programme it is proposed to add 365 substations of 33/11 during 2011-12. APDiscoms have proposed to construct around 1,800 substations of 33/11 kv and erect over 4 lakh DTRs in the next four years apart from laying 33 kv and 11 kv lines.
