KOTTAYAM: In a bizarre incident, an under-construction protection wall on the Kottayam-Kumarakom Road, which was to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister this week, collapsed at Arattupuzha near Thazhathangadi on Sunday.Around 200 metres of the wall, which had been under construction along the banks of the Meenachil river, caved in, and together a road-roller that was parked on the wayside, fell into the river. The incident occurred around 9 pm on Sunday night. A considerable portion of the road also sank into the river, leaving it no longer fit for traffic. A deep crack, nearly 20 metres in length, had appeared on a portion of the road close to the protection wall, three days ago. It was later cleared by PWD workers. The protection wall was supposed to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister on April 14. Local residents alleged that illegal sand mining, which is rampant in the area, might have led to the collapsing of the wall. The work on the protection wall had started after frequent accidents claimed several lives. Eleven people had died in the last accident, when a bus capsized in the river.
