MADURAI: Puthiya Tamilagam leader K Krishnasamy, who was resurrected from political oblivion thanks to his alliance with the AIADMK, has alleged that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) spearheading the anti-nuclear plant protests at Koodankulam were surviving on foreign funds. His allegation comes a day after Minister of State in the PMO Narayanasamy stirred the hornet’s nest by announcing that the Centre was probing into the source of funding for the agitation. Addressing journalists here on Sunday, Krishnasamy claimed that certain foreign agencies which were supporting NGO-run projects in the field of Dalit emancipation, tribal and women’s rights in the region were extending support to those opposing the Indo-Russian project. “For such NGOs, the Koodankulam agitation has turned out be yet another project to tap foreign funds,” he charged. The PT leader compared this to the manner in which NGOs had collected enormous funds during the 2004 tsunami. He went on to accuse NGOs spearheading the agitation of lacking ideological position but solely driven by the funding aspect. He believed that the anti-nuclear movement did not have any support from the people at the grassroots. Asked if he was extending support to the Congress on this issue, Krishnasamy replied that this was his “independent stand” on the issue.
