CHENNAI: With a view to increasing pulse production in the State which now stands at a minimal quantum, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced that ‘Pulse Wonder’, a new crop booster, developed by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), will be applied on 50,000 hectares in 1,695 villages. The crop booster will be made available to farmers at half of the original cost. The CM has allocated Rs 212.50 crore towards subsidy for the purpose, an official release said. The ‘Pulse Wonder’ mixture can be sprinkled during the flowering and fruiting stages of the pulses to reduce flower shedding, while increasing the production by 10 to 20 per cent, the release said and added that the mixture can be used for urid dhall and moong dhall in lieu of the DAP mixture.Though pulses are being cultivated on six lakh hectares in TN, the annual production stands at just two lakh metric tonnes. The crop booster comprises nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium besides auxin and will help farmers get higher yield.
