New Delhi: Despite an aid package of $6.7 billion, reconstruction in many quake-hit regions of northern Pakistan has still not begun. According to the NGO Oxfam, 1.8 million people are still living in temporary shelters.
"We are living in these shelters (tents and temporary shelters), my husband is jobless and we are facing problems. We will be in trouble when it starts raining and snowing. We appreciate if you can do anything to help us," says an earthquake refugee, Habib Ul Nisa.
The task of rebuilding is daunting. More than 6,00,000 homes, 6,500 schools and 800 clinics and hospitals were destroyed by the quake. Over 6,000 kilometres of roads were also destroyed.
"Even one year after the earthquake, there are still many health facilities not operational. Through mobile health units operated by the International Red Cross, we try to give people access to health care," says International Federation of Red Cross, Health Coordinator, Jos Miesen.
Ensuring access to clean water and health care remains an important part of rehabilitation, for aid agencies in the quake hit zone. Schools are functioning although most classes are still conducted under the canvas.
