New Delhi: After a string of attacks by insurgents that rocked Assam on Friday, the passengers of the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express had a miraculous escape early on Saturday morning.

A powerful bomb exploded on the railway tracks in central Assam just after the train passed the spot of the blast.

The train's air-conditioning machine and a water tank was damaged in the blast that occurred on a bridge over Dharani river between Diphu and Doldolni in the Lamding division of NF Railway at 0059 hrs IST on Saturday, news agency PTI quoted North-east Frontier Railway sources as saying.

Reports said there was no loss of life or injuries to passengers.

The driver and the guard of the train felt a jerk and stopped the train after hearing a loud blast. They saw that AC undergear and the water tank of a three-tier coach was damaged, PTI quoted them as saying.

Police rushed to the spot after the blast and gave a security clearance at 0400 hrs (IST) for starting repair work on tracks.

Railway officials were assessing the damage for repair and restoration of the track.

Trains passing over the track have been halted at Dimapur, Diphu, Lamding and other stations, the sources said.

The identity of those behind the blast was not clear.

On Friday, at least 15 people were killed and several wounded in a series of attacks by ULFA militants in Assam's Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts

Police sources say victims were mostly migrant brick kiln workers. Masked ULFA cadres killed 10 people in Tinsukia district and seven in neighbouring Dibrugarh district.

The police say militants were armed with AK-47 rifles. Security has been tightened and the Army has launched a combing operation.
