KOCHI: A fraudster, who allegedly traps women and rapes them, was arrested after a tough chase in the city on Sunday evening.The police, who nabbed him in connection with a rape case, are yet to ascertain the total number of women who have fallen victims to his nefarious designs.The arrested has been identified as Benny alias Santhosh Varghese of Thuruthy Malayil, Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district.He was arrested from Vyttila by a team comprising Kalamassery Circle-Inspector G K Raju, Sub-Inspector C J Martin and senior civil police officers Antony Sebastian and Majeed.The police said the modus operandi of the accused in trapping women came to light after a 28-year-old woman hailing from Kanyakumari lodged a complaint with the police that she was allegedly raped by the accused. The woman, who was in a serious condition, was admitted to the Taluk Hospital in Kottayam.According to the police, the accused allegedly raped her at a lodge in the city on June 13. The woman, working as a home nurse, fell victim after she was taken by an agent to the accused who presented himself as a doctor and wanted the service of a home nurse to look after his ‘ailing mother’. The police have also taken into custody the agent identified as Chandrasekhar. The accused used to contact organisations supplying home nurses and direct them to bring the women to his residence at Ponekkara in the city. “He looks for advertisements in leading newspapers and contacts them. He is also known for wooing divorcees who give matrimonial ads. We have launched a detailed probe to track the details of the women who have been abused by the person,” the police said.
