New Delhi: For two years filmmaker David Dhawan has been out of the arc lights. His last film was 'Do Knot Disturb' in 2009, which had featured Govinda, Lara Dutta, Sushmita Sen and Reitesh Deshmukh in the lead roles. The film was rejected out rightly by the audiences.
Just prior to 'Do Knot Disturb', Dhawan's 'Partner' was a big hit that marked the slapstick comeback of Govinda.
Before 'Partner', Dhawan was looking for a commercial success. After three back to back successful films in the year 1999, David Dhawan managed seven failed attempts in 'Kunwara', 'Jodi No. 1', 'Chal Mere Bhai', 'Chor Machaye Shor', 'Yeh Hai Jalwa', 'Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahi' and 'Ek Aur Ek Gyarah'.
At that time, several film critics had started to voice their opinion about the kind of slapstick comedies Dhawan was making.
That pressurized Dhawan to modify his style a bit. 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' in the year 2004 saw the emergence of a new Dhawan who was focussing more on situational comedy than slapstick dialogue.
Unlike other Dhawan films, 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' featured suave characters who did not use vulgar or double entendre to convey their feelings.
The film steered clear of the typical Govinda style suggestive dance moves.
Of course the film had a scene where Akshay Kumar uses 'Kaanta Laga' girl Shefali Zariwala to trap Salman Khan in his net, but that scene too managed to not look obscene due to the director's focus on their facial expressions rather than bare bodies.
Dhawan's next after 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' was 'Shaadi No. 1', where he returned to his old style of tongue in cheek comedy. The film did not sustain for more than ten days at big centres.
'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' was an extension of 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' in style.
Salman Khan was very different than his earlier films with David Dhawan. The film looked more designer than Dhawan’s trademark approach of showcasing middle class characters.
This change in style met with the success at the box office too.
Dhawan went with the same idea in 'Partner'. Full of style, the film was shot at exotic locations, which were not seen in 'Loafer' or 'Coolie No. 1'.
'Do Knot Disturb' was his attempt to hit the jackpot with Priyadarshan style of comedy which generally portrays a whole bunch of confused character at the same scenario.
This idea proved costly as the film did not recover its cost.
Now, the promos of 'Rascals' are showing the same vulgar dance steps which were once the copyright moves of Govinda.
'Tik Tuk' song seems closer to 'Haseena Maan Jayegi' than 'Just Chill'. Sanjay Dutt with a fat belly is not hesitating before doing pelvic thrusts. Similarly, Ajay Devgn has that looser looking expression on his face which was once flaunted by Bobby Deol in 'Chor Machaye Shor'.
Over all, the whole presentation including an ambiguous name suggests that 'Rascals' is probably going to give David Dhawan the chance to return to his niche comedy style.
