KOCHI: Despite having a pompous sobriquet, the city lacks the basic facilities to give a decent farewell to the dead, Excise Minister K Babu said at the inauguration of the renovation work of the Ravipuram crematorium, held at Rotary Balabhavan in Panampilly Nagar, on Monday. The renovation work, which began on Monday, is the prime task to be included under the ‘Kochi First’ concept of the Corporation, he said. The work, implemented on a public-private-participation (PPP) mode, will be carried out jointly by the Rotary Club of Cochin and the Corporation. The Rotary Club of Cochin will contribute Rs 60 lakh towards the total cost estimate of Rs 95 lakh.“The present crematorium at Ravipuram lacks facilities for the conduct of Hindu rituals associated with cremation. I hope that the Corporation will look into this aspect,” the Minister said.Rotary Club of Cochin president K Lava noted that the renovation work includes the replacement of the old cremator with an LPG-powered one, installation of a 30-metre-tall chimney and beautification of the surrounding area. Mayor Tony Chammany, Deputy Mayor B Bhadra, MLAs Dominic Presentation and Benny Behanan, GCDA chairman N Venugopal, Rotary Club of Cochin’s former district governor Venugopal C Govind, councillors K J Jacob and Suja Roy, Corporation standing committee chairpersons K J Sohan and Sowmini Jain, Corporation secretary Ajith B Patil and Rotary Club members were present.
