BANGALORE: Clarifying his stand on the recruitment of women as bartenders, Excise Minister M P Renukacharya said that following the verdicts of the Supreme Court and Karnataka High Court, bar owners are free to appoint women as bartenders and the Excise Department’s role in this regard is ‘literally nothing’.Both the courts had struck down the provision of the Excise Act, which prohibited the employment of women in bars and restaurants. So, the bar owners are free to appoint women bar tenders.“The question of giving or denying permission by the Excise Department, therefore, does not arise at all,” he told reporters here. However, he said that the department can take action, including cancellation of licences, if it found bars, with women bartenders, indulging in immoral activities. To a question, he denied having said that the department would give permission to bars to employ women.
