Rise in number of foreign students under ICCR programme

Karnataka, especially Mysore, has once again proved to be one of the favourite destinations among foreign students when it comes to admissions to universities and educational institutions under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) programme.

In the admissions held so far to various under graduate, post graduate and doctoral programmes, ICCR Bangalore Regional office, has seen a sharp rise in the number of admissions. While 234 foreign nationals took admissions to various universities and institutions of the state last year, this year, the number has reached 319 with the admissions to MBA courses still to be concluded. Among those who opted for the state, at least half of them have chosen Mysore city, known for its salubrious environment.

The University of Mysore campus alone has got 113 students for various PG and doctoral programmes, with the remaining choosing St Philomena’s, Teresian, Mahajana’s and JSS Law for various UG courses. Last year, UoM had got 90 foreign students. Bangalore University has the second highest number of students after UoM.

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore; Karnatak University, Dharwad; and NIT-K, Suratkal, are the others in the state that have many foreign students on Government of India scholarships under the ICCR programme.

The recent trends show that the Bangalore office which handles ICCR admissions in the state has edged out the ICCR Pune regional office which handles the admissions in universities and colleges in Pune and neighbouring districts.

While the Bangalore office has seen an increase in admissions, Pune has witnessed a dip with the number of foreign nationals seeking admissions going down from around 280 last year to 260. P Venugopal, Programme Officer, ICCR Bangalore Region, attributed the increase to the interest shown by the Regional Office in coordinating with the prospective students and easy accommodation facilities.

He said the state got a 1,000 plus applications this time against 700 last time.
