New Delhi: The CBI has recovered nearly Rs 82 lakhs in cash - taken as bribes and stashed away at different locations in Mumbai - allegedly by the Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Rupesh Kumar Gupta.
The investigative agency has also recovered nearly Rs 66 lakhs from a Kotak securities office in the western suburb of Malad in Mumbai late on Wednesday night. The bureau had laid a trap for the IT officer last Friday, where he was caught red-handed demanding a bribe of Rs 8 lakh and taking the first installment of four from an assessee.
During questioning Gupta revealed other locations where he had kept huge amounts of cash and that the Rs 66 lakh was one of them. He also revealed that he had invested the bribe money with different brokers.
"We have recovered nearly Rs 82 lakh and as far as Gupta's property is concerned, it has crossed nearly Rs 3.5 crore," says CBI Joint Director, Rishi Prakash Singh.
