MP lifted a ban, imposed by the ex-Cong regime, on state govt employees from participating in Sangh activities.

Bhopal: Describing RSS as a socio-cultural organisation, Madhya Pradesh on Thursday lifted a ban, imposed by the previous Congress regime, on the state government employees from participating in Sangh activities.

"We have lifted the ban on government employees from taking part in RSS activities," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters.

RSS is not a political organisation, but a socio-cultural organisation, he said, adding that it has been associated with various cultural and social events.

Necessary amendments have been made in the state Civil Services Conduct Rules to revoke the ban imposed during the Digvijay Singh rule, official sources said.

Circulars in this regard have been issued to all heads of the departments, commissioners and collectors, they added.

Protesting the move, opposition Congress has threatened to launch a state-wide agitation unless the decision is withdrawn.

Accusing RSS of "disturbing communal harmony", state Congress spokesman Manak Agrawal said the Sangh is also politically active as several of its leaders work for BJP.

"The government employees are forbidden by law to take part in any activity of political parties," he said, adding that the decision to lift the ban was taken by the BJP government 'at the direction of RSS headquarters in Nagpur'.
