Pune: In a twist to the case related to the alleged attack on RTI activist Arun Mane, police on Tuesday said he has now withdrawn his "false complaint" which he had filed in a "disturbed" state of mind, even as the activist claimed he took the step fearing safety of his family.
Rural police superintendent Pratap Degaonkar told reporters that Mane had given an application to the police saying that he had filed a "false complaint" about attack on him at Talegaon Dabhade on Sunday in a mentally disturbed
state.
Circumstantial evidence also did not point to an attack on Mane from outsiders, he said.
Meanwhile, confirming that he had filed an application with police withdrawing his complaint, Mane told a regional TV channel, "I and my family members have been under extreme mental tension and I decided to put a stop to the whole thing fearing for their safety".
He, however, maintained that he was attacked by unidentified miscreants when he went to open his shop at Talegaon Dabhade on Sunday morning.
Mane, an associate of Satish Shetty, another RTI activist who was killed last year, was subsequently admitted to a hospital for minor injuries supposedly inflicted with an iron rod.
Police said they were examining forensic reports to determine whether the injuries on Mane's person were self-inflicted.
