Beijing India’s tennis sensation Sania Mirza retired hurt in the first round of women's singles at Beijing this morning.
The Indian player was down 1-6, 1-2 to Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic.
Speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN minutes before the match on Monday morning, Sania had said that she was not worried about the pressure at all.
“Of course, there's always pressure. I think, when you come from a country like India where people are so emotional about their heroes and their athletes, or whatever, there is pressure. But I think it is very good pressure and this is the kind of pressure everyone dreams of...to be the medal hope at the Olympics for your own country. I am very excited to be here, to be at my first Olympics...first time in China as well,” said the girl from Hyderabad who had become the first Indian woman to reach the third round of a Grand Slam --in the 2005 Australian Open," Sania said.
“I am going to try and just turn that into a positive and the least I can do is to give it my best. You know it is very different. Grand Slams happen maybe 30, 40 or even 50 times in your life but the Olympics happen just once in your life time and if you are lucky, then maybe twice or thrice,” Sania had added as she looked forward to the Olympics 2008 match with Benesova.
But that was not to be as she developed a wrist injury during the match.
Sania had said that she just wanted to give her best instead of putting additional pressure on herself just before the crucial match.
IF Sania had managed to get past Benesova, she would have faced Serena Williams. She had lost to the younger Williams sister in the Indian’s first Grand Slam in 2005.
Refusing to compare what would thrill her more, an Olympic win or a Grand Slam title, Sania had said, “I think they are both very big feats in two different ways and if I had to pick, I'd pick both,” she added.
