BANGALORE: ‘Sanskrit is not dead’ was the idea propagated at the annual convocation of Karnataka Sanskrit University here on Tuesday. In the event, several students and teachers from across the state were felicitated. Former Vice-Chancellor of Rashtriya Samskruta Vidyapeeta of Tirupati Prof Prahladacharya, delivering the convocation address said, “Sanskrit is lost, but not dead.” “Many critics say Sanskrit is a dead language. I beg to differ. Sanskrit is alive as long as languages are alive,” he said, referring to Kannada that has borrowed a number of words from Sanskrit. “It is unfortunate that we have lost touch with the ancient language. The only ones who are keeping Sanskrit alive are teachers”, he added. Twelve students who scored exceptional marks in Sanskrit in the academic year 2010-11 were felicitated and 12 Sanskrit institutes affiliated to the university were honoured for their services in teaching Sanskrit. Principal Secretary of Higher Education Department G Lata Krishnarao gave away medals to the graduates.“Sanskrit is a bridge between the material and the spiritual. We need Sanskrit for the ideas, morals, values and lessons that it carries,” said Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Mallepuram G Venkatesh.
