New Delhi: The Goa murder mystery is getting murkier. On Tuesday, Goa police, who have been under fire for shoddy investigation, hinted there could be a drugs angle into Scarlette Keeling's death.

State Inspector General of Police Kishen Kumar told CNN-IBN that the role of drug dealers is being probed.

His statement comes even as reports in the British media cite a person who claims to found Scarlette high on cocaine and LSD hours before she was found dead.

He also reportedly saw the man who offered Scarlette the lift on his scooter that night from the Lui's bar. He says he later saw barman Samson D'Souza assault the 15-year-old girl.

D'Souza has been arrested by the Goa police.

The witness says he fled to Britain the day Scarlette's body was found fearing trouble in Goa.

However, the Inspector General of police in Goa, Kishan Kumar claims that it is too early to link the case to drugs.

While questions are being raised over the inefficiency and carelessness of the state police force, Goa CM Kamat defended them, saying tourists, too, had to exercise caution.

“Simply blaming the government and the police force is not the right thing to do,” says Kamat.

He also brushed aside fears that the Scarlette case could impact the state's tourism industry.

“Even before any conclusion comes out, some media channels have started saying that Goa is unsafe. I don't think this incident will have an impact on Goa tourism,” adds Kamat.

Tourism Minister Ambika Soni also told Parliament on Tuesday that the crime against foreign tourists has actually gone down.

“Except for accident figures that have gone up, comparative figures released by MHA reveals that figures have gone down,” Soni said.
