Ghaziabad: In a major embarrassment for the Uttar Pradesh Police, a senior police officer shot himself while cleaning his service pistol on Thursday evening.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ghaziabad, Brijlal Meena was cleaning his pistol when it went off and injured his left hand.
The officer was rushed to the Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad.
Meena has now been discharged, but doctors say he has seriously fractured his left palm.
It is generally unheard of for an officer of the rank of an SSP to clean his own weapon while senior police officials call this a rare case, the SP of Ghaziabad seems to think it is a routine affair.
Meena, who joined as SSP here last Sunday, was cleaning the revolver when the incident took place at around 1800 hours (IST) at the CBI guest house where he was staying, they said.
District Magistrate Deepak Kumar Aggarwal told PTI that the SSP's left palm was injured.
"The SSP was cleaning the revolver when it went off accidentally," a senior police official said.
The District Magistrate denied that the SSP was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident and ruled out the possibility of lodging a case against the officer.
Meanwhile, Meena told reporters at the hospital that his weapon went off accidentally and he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
