New Delhi: There are some surgical devices which are termed as Single Use Devices (SUDs) that means these devices should not be reused.
And we have heard of the reuse of syringes and needles to transmit diseases like HIV & Hepatitis B and C.
But apart from them some other critical devices like surgical saw blades, biopsy forceps, surgical drills & laparoscopy scissors are often being reused and without the knowledge of the patients.
Yes we received the samples of some devices used for operations in the operation theatres submitted by one of the organisations and our report clearly shows that they have a heavy microbial contamination," Director of Shree Ram Institute, Delhi, says.
The test results have come close on the heels of the findings of a survey undertaken by VOICE, a Delhi based NGO fighting for consumer/patients rights.
The survey indicates that 100 per cent of the doctors in India reuse the critical care devices like biopsy forceps ignoring the fact that manufacturers put a symbol 'not for reuse'. But what do the doctors have to say on this?
"Various SUDs can be reprocessed and used safely while maintaining their efficacy and in our practice basically to cut down the cost of the procedure. We do use reprocessed adequately sterelised SUDs," Senior Consultant, Gastroentrology, Dr Randhir Sud says
So the next time you undergo an invasive medical procedure, you might as well make sure that you are well informed about the device used for your mouth, your heart or your intestines.
