PHULBANI: The bodies of three cops, who were ambushed in a landmine blast near Padiapanga village in Kotagarh area of Kandhamal district, were cremated here on Friday. The bodies of constables Sunasir Mohanty, Umakant Jani and Home Guard Sangram Lenka were brought to the Reserve Police Line at Madikunda after an autopsy at Balliguda hospital on Friday morning. Senior police officers IG (operations) YB Khurania, DIG (SR) RK Sharma, SP JN Pankaj, Collector RP Patil, MLA of Balliguda Karendra Majhi and Phulbani MLA Debendra Konhor paid floral tributes. Later, the bodies were taken in a procession through the town before being handed over to their respective families. The cops were cremated in Peon Pada, Phulbani Sahi and Titrapanga burial grounds with full State honours. As a mark of respect, all the educational institutions, government offices and banks remained closed on the day. Several shopkeepers voluntarily downed shutters while judicial courts did not function.Bandh was also observed in Balliguda, Sarangada and G Udaygiri areas of Kandhamal. Mohanty and Jani joined service in 2002 while Lenka joined in 2008. Mohanty is survived by his wife and three-year-old daughter. Mohanty’s elder brother alleged that his brother was forced to go to on the operation, despite a leg injury and was on leave. Jani leaves behind his wife and Six-month-old son while Lenka was a bachelor.
