RAMANATHAPURAM: Envisaging a wider scope for the Uchipuli Naval Air Station, former President APJ Abdul Kalam said that he would forward a requisition to the ministry concerned on converting the existing naval air station into an airport.After inaugurating the gallery ‘Mission of Life’ established on the first floor of his house here on Monday, Kalam said that his friend Sivathanu Pillai, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Brahmos Aerospace and Indo-Russian Joint Venture for making Supersonic cruise missile, played a major role to bring the gallery for public viewing. Many photos and awards are displayed for the benefit of young generation and it might inspire them to invent something new for the progress of the nation, he opined. Since Rameswaram is a place thronged by tourists, the museum would not only sow the seeds of invention in youth but also those who come to the museum from other places, Kalam said and added that steps would be taken to add new inventions in the gallery.The new attraction in the holy town features childhood photos of Kalam, awards given in recognition of his invention and as the president of the nation, a model of Agni missile, the group photo of his school friends, other photos and some materials to woo the visitors.Sivathanu Pillai said that the photos displayed at the gallery would take the visitor into the school and college days of the former president. Moreover, two guides who know three languages Tamil, Hindi and English, have to be engaged at the gallery to explain the life history and other details of the photos to the visitors, he added.District Collector Arun Roy, District Sessions Court Judge Bala Sundara Kumar and other officials met the former president at his house. Later, Kalam interacted with his brother Muthu Meera Lebbai Maraikayar and his family members.
