A special committee formed by the Vellore Corporation to check illegal water tapping in the city has begun its operation on Saturday.
A team of officials headed by Underground Drainage System (UGDS) Assistant Executive Engineer and Corporation Engineer in-charge Ashok Kumar conducted a check at Moolakollai area near Rangapuram in Zone II, wherein he officials listed out the illegal and legal water connections. Further, the residents failing to pay the water tax were admonished by the authorities to do the same at the earliest.
When Ashok Kumar was contacted, he said, “Further decision would be made only after studying the list and consulting the officials. Meanwhile, the checks and visits would continue over the weekend.”
Villagers Demand Action Against Illegal Wa Villagers of Agragaram near Jolarpet attempted to stage a road blockade with empty pots on Saturday demanding action against illegal water tapping by the local residents.
The villagers earlier held a protest in front of the village panchayat office highlighting this issue. They claimed that some of the residents had fixed electric motors to harness water in their houses, which had affected supply of water in public taps.
Soon, the Natrampalli police arrived on the scene and pacified the agitators. Panchayat President Anbazhagi, who also visited the spot, said that to ease the situation, she was supplying water by lorries. She assured the residents that flaws in water connection such as leakages and breakages in pipelines would be checked and rectified.
