Special: Sex truths you must know!
Everything that you are told need not happen the first time you have sex.

“You will bleed on the first night.”

“The first time you have sex, you will feel excruciating pain.”

“If you don’t bleed the first time you have sex, that means you are not a virgin.”

These are just a few ‘must happens’ (according to your wise aunts) for the first time you have sex. While a few of this may hold true for some of you, everything that you are told need not happen.

First Time Sex

Gynaecologist Dr Ranjana Dhanu says, “An intact hymen is not a definition of virginity at all. This is because with women, doing so much of strenuous physical activity and exercise it is normal if your hymen stretches or even breaks during these activities.”

It is normal to spot or bleed a little after you have sex for the first time. You will spot or bleed immediately after your hymen is ruptured and in some cases even the following morning.

If you are spotting or if you have light bleeding the next morning, you can wear a panty liner or sanitary napkin.

Bleeding Excessively?

If you find that you are bleeding excessively (you have a continuous flow of blood) after intercourse then this is probably because you have a vaginal tear that has extended into the vaginal wall.

In this case, you will need medical attention immediately.

Your gynaecologist will give you local or antiseptic cream and you will be fine in a few days.

This happens either because you are not lubricated enough before penetration or because the idea of pain during sex scares you and you have a mental block against it.

Also make sure you wear a sanitary pad for as long as you have post-sex bleeding.

To avoid this you need a lot of foreplay, lubrication and tenderness during the act. If it is your mental block that caused you to ‘close-up’ then make sure that you convey your fears and anxieties to your partner.

This way he will know what you are feeling and he will make sure that you are comfortable and confident the next time you have sex.

PAGE_BREAK

The breaking of the hymen is usually attached to sex, but it is important to remember that you can break your hymen doing strenuous non-sexual activity like swimming, skiing or horse-back riding.

This is because when you do any of these activities there is extra pressure on the vaginal area which tends to stretch or even tear the hymen.

Know Your Hymen

Think you know your hymen? After all you’ve heard a lot about it. Here are a few truths about your hymen.

  • The hymen is outside the vaginaThe hymen lies outside your vagina. It is a mucous membrane that is a part of your vulva.
  • Broken HymenJust because your hymen is broken, it does not mean that you are not a virgin. As stated earlier, you can break your hymen if you are doing any strenuous sport. This is because the additional pressure on the vaginal area stretches or even breaks the hymen.
  • You must bleed the first time you have sexYou do not have to bleed the first time you have sex. This is because you could have stretched or even broken your hymen during your childhood. So it is not necessary that you will bleed after your first sexual encounter.

You have nothing to worry about. Just take the necessary precautions in case you have excessive post-sex bleeding.
