Sports Meet: High-energy athletic moments
The ongoing 55th Kerala State Schools Athletics Championship being held at the Maharaja's College ground is buzzing wit..

KOCHI: Though the police are often blamed for not implementing the ‘janamaitri’ policy, the Kochi city policemen are showing harmony to the budding stars at the Maharaja’s College Synthetic Track Stadium, where the 55th Kerala state athletic meet began on Thursday You can see policemen in uniform serving drinking water to the athletes, officials and visitors of the meet. The service oriented initiative of the police gains added significance as Kochi may not have pure drinking water available all the time and one may have to pay Rs 15 for one litre of mineral water. Not enough foodAn initial confusion arose at the food serving area during the morning hours of the athletic championship, as sufficient food was not available. The stall, organised by the Sports Council, at the entrance of the Maharaja’s ground, was meant to provide food for the Kerala Police students, media and the other visitors. According to the officials, the Sports Council had not expected these many people to avail their services during the morning hours. However, everything turned normal soon.Organisers offer no help“Sorry, I don’t belong to this committee.” It seems like the organisers of the athletics meet have trained their officials to say this in case of request for help. The organisers of the meet showed their incapability in disseminating information. No enquiry desk is functioning at the venue. If an official is approached, one cannot get any information but the above mentioned answer and the person will be directed from one counter to the another. There were lapses on the part of media committee too. Reporters and photographers who brought laptops had to stop the work in the middle as the computer batteries drained out. Repeated requests to provide a power point at the media gallery fell on deaf ears.Former participants stage protestThe former participants of the Kerala state schools athletic meet, staged a protest against the state government during the official inauguration of the 55th Kerala State Schools Athletics Championship on Thursday. The students who are national as well as state level champions, held placards, asking the state government to consider the list prepared by them for job recruitment. “We need the government to consider our situation. We are the people who have been deprived our rights and our jobs for the past six years or so. We are jobless and without hope,” the athletes shouted during the protest.
