New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday night rejected the resignation of Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan, who quit after six people were killed and 15 injured in an accident at a Metro construction site in the national capital.
Sources tell CNN-IBN Dikshit has sent a letter to Sreedharan requesting him to continue and her Cabinet will discuss the matter on Monday.
Sreedharan owned the "moral responsibility" for the accident and stepped down as managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief on Sunday.
The concrete slabs that collapsed were part of an elevated section of a new Metro route between the Central Secretariat and Badarpur section. The accident took place early Sunday morning at the construction site at Zamrudpur near Kailash Colony in south Delhi.
“I have been in charge of the Metro since the beginning. I take full responsibility for the accident, and having taken the full moral responsibility I resign as the managing director of the Delhi Metro," said Sreedharan at a press conference.
"I may not be directly connected with the accident. But I am the head of the organisation and have to take the moral responsibility."
Sreedharan has been responsible for the construction of the Metro rail project in Delhi, which uses some of the most advanced technology in the field of civil, electrical, signalling and telecommunication engineering worldwide.
Sreedharan was earlier responsible for building the largest rail project in India after Independence by linking the west coast of India through the 760 km-long Konkan Railway line.
He has been conferred several honours, including the country's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri in 2001 and he was named the Asian Hero by Time magazine in 2003.
He was the CNN IBN Indian of the Year for public service in 2007.
