Srinagar: Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has been declared as the first among India's seven heritage cities.
Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Jammu and Kashmir chapter Convener, Saleem Beg informed that this was due to the special consideration given by INTACH in heritage resource mapping of the historic city of Srinagar.
On the basis of INTACH's monumental work and documentation, Beg said Srinagar has been declared as the first city among the list of seven heritage cities of India.
In 2002, some prominent people got together and formed a non-governmental organisation, Centre for Heritage and Environment of Kashmir (CHEK), he added.
Beg said the NGO started looking at the state of preservation of the architectural heritage of Srinagar.
"CHEK was able to lay its hands on a report prepared by INTACH in 1988 on heritage zones of Srinagar. The report brought to light for the first time the living heritage of the city represented by its wooden buildings, Sufi shrines and the river front," he added.
Beg said CHEK approached the Jammu and Kashmir government for funding the cultural resource mapping of the city and requested INTACH to undertake the project.
INTACH completed the project in September last year and it was later presented to the state government, he added.
