CHENNAI: SRM University’s Vadapalani campus welcomed its first year students on Monday by organising a function. The university Chancellor T R Pachamuthu, V-C Provost Ponnavaiko and other academic and administrative heads were present for the gathering and welcomed the students. “Only 12.6 per cent students in this country enjoy the opportunity to pursue higher studies after graduating from school,” Vice Chancellor Ponnavaiko said. “SRM has signed Memoranda of Understanding with 90 universities abroad to help students pursue degrees with foreign universities and we also have numerous schemes for international education such as the student abroad programme and double degree programme,” he added. Ponnavaiko stressed the importance of lessons taught in school and the fact that basic knowledge shapes the foundation on which the engineering studies are based. “You students will have to refresh your memories of school text books in case you have lost touch. That will help you learn of engineering better.”Addressing the students, Chancellor T R Pachamuthu said, “Deemed University gives a multicultural learning environment which is lacking in affiliated colleges. We have students from across 47countries studying here, apart from students from other states of our country. This fosters a multicultural education.”
