The authorities of the new government general hospital (GGH) here are planning to appoint postgraduate students and house surgeons on a temporary basis in place of the striking junior doctors (JDs) to avoid inconvenience to patients.
A decision on it will be taken depending on the outcome of the discussions between APJUDA and the government which will take place in Hyderabad.
Junior doctors, who have been attending only emergency cases for the past six days, have announced that they will boycott even the emergency services if they do not get a positive response from the government by Monday evening.
Speaking to Express, new GGH superintendent Babu Lal said that if the doctors boycotted emergency services also, the hospital authorities would hold a meeting with district medical and health officer, district coordinators of hospitals and others on alternative arrangements.
He said they were managing the situation by utilising the services of PG students and student nurses so that out-patients would not suffer.
The services will run as usual.
There are around 160 junior doctors and service PG students taking part in the strike, some of whom are attending emergency cases.
Around 150 general medicine, 70 orthopaedic, 60 surgery, 50 dermatology, 45 neurology, 20 cardiology, 12 ART and plastic surgery out-patient cases were registered on Monday.
On an average, 1,200 to 1,500 patients visit the hospital every day.
On Monday the striking JDs organised a funeral procession from the medical college to the Ramavarappadu Ring carrying the government in effigy and burning it.
They also shouted slogans against the director of medical education.
In Guntur, government general hospital unit leader R Balaram Naik said that 150 service PG students and 150 house surgeons at GGH would boycott the emergency services from Tuesday if the government did not accept the junior doctors’ demands
