Student politics: cop killed in Kerala campus violence
Police have arrested four members of the ABVP and taken another eight people into custody.

Kerala: Campus politics in Kerala is rearing its ugly head again. On Friday, a policeman was killed in clashes between student unions. The state government has ordered a high-level enquiry.

Assistant Sub-Inspector MC Elias was killed on duty not by criminals but by students. Elias was hit by a wooden plank during a clash between rival student unions at the NSS Hindu College in Chagnaserry. He is the most recent victim of increasing campus violence in Kerala. The government promises it will take action.

State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan says, “It was the RSS backed ABVP which has done this in Chagnaserry. We have given the police all the necessary directions to take strict action against all those found guilty.”

Political parties responded in the way they know best -- calling a one-day strike in Kottayam. Police have arrested four members of the ABVP and taken another eight people into custody. The government has also ordered a high level enquiry into the incident, which will be headed by an inspector general of police.

Minister for Education MA Babi said, “The government will make sure that campuses are misused in no way to create violent situations. We will make sure that outsiders do not get into campuses and create such situations.”

The state government says it will initiate strict action to stop campus violence. But unless political parties stop using campuses as their battle fields, more innocent lives will be lost because of meaningless causes.
