CHENNAI: Alleging that their college lacked even basic infrastructure such as proper classrooms and required numbered of faculty, 23 students from a private nursing institution in Krishnagiri, on Monday, gathered before the Directorate of Medical Education here to press for action against the college management. They wanted the government to shift them to another college to pursue their studies. Students of the Jeeva College of Nursing, located in the Puliancheri village in Krishnagiri, said that they were admitted there through counseling conducted by the Dr MGR Medical University last year. They were the first batch of B.Sc. Nursing students for the institution, which received permission to start the course only last year. They said classes had not functioned for the past two months as the college did not have enough teachers. In the hostel there was no warden. A lone cook made the food with no workers for housekeeping. Lack of equipment also meant that practical sessions had not been conducted in the last four months, the students alleged. Maheshwari, a student, said that the college was in a secluded area, which posed many security issues. Students said while an inspection was conducted in the college after they came to Chennai and met the Health Minister on Feb 29, there had been no communication from the University. Hence, they had come back on Monday to know what action had been initiated to shift them to a new college. When contacted, Director of Medical Education, C Vamsadhara, said that the complaint has been taken up and action would soon be initiated against the college management.
