KOCHI: Robust activities towards efficient waste management system should begin from the grama panchayats, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday. He was speaking at the inauguration of Thrikkakara constituency’s Suchitwa Keralam project, which has been initiated to make Kerala free of waste.“The project will be initiated in all 140 constituencies soon,” Chandy said. He also said that the government will emphasise on decentralised system of waste management. He said that support from all quarters is a pre-requisite to give a fillip to this project.The Chief Minister warned that the city will soon be in the clutches of contagious diseases if the callous disposal of waste was not stopped. “Though the state is moving ahead in all other arenas, it is languishing in waste disposal,” he said. In connection with this programme, various awareness campaigns will also be organised. Benny Behanan MLA presided over the function. Mayor Tony Chammany, District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth, Dominic Presentation MLA, Hibi Eden MLA and Vyttila Mobility Hub MD M Beena were also present.
