Survey indicates serious anomalies

THENHIPALAM: The survey to identify encroachments on the Calicut University land by various institutions functioning under employees unions began on Monday. On day one, the panel surveyed the land leased out to various societies. Two societies of pro-UDF unions and five of pro-LDF unions are functioning on the campus.  There were complaints that the unions are misusing the land allotted for the societies. There were also complaints that the land was handed over to other parties to run business. “The survey has found serious anomalies with regard to the land controlled by the employees unions. Some of the unions are using the land for other purposes,” T A Ashrafali, a committee member, said.The committee has also sought the revenue details of the institutions run by the unions since it doubts that  the societies had not submitted the exact details for official records.The committee will survey the land leased out for various Chairs on Tuesday. Allegations of encroachment have been raised against the EMS Chair. The committee received a complaint that the allocation of land to the EMS Chair did not follow legal procedures.A three-member sub-committee of the Syndicate will complete the survey in two days. The committee is assisted by the Engineering Department on the varsity campus.The decision to form a panel for probing into the previous land deals was taken by the last Syndicate meeting which also quashed the three controversial land deals. The committee will submit the report at the Syndicate meeting on Wednesday.
