The conference was jointly organised by the Department of Visual Communication and the Women’s Cell of the college.The conference threw light on how women are being portrayed in the media today and also called for sensitising the media towards the portrayal of women in the name of sensation.In addition, the conference also discussed how the media could be an effective tool in promoting constructive change and the ways in which it could represent the multiple roles of the women today.The conference featured paper presentations on a variety of topics such as rare representation of women in sports in movies, changing image of women in film posters, coverage of women and women issues.“Paper presentations are being done by educationists and professors from Haryana, Maharashtra and from various other educational institutions in the city. It is an attempt to educate students on the prevalent scenario,” said S Hema Malini, head of the department, Visual Communications.Joshua Kipkemoi Boitt from the  Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad made a special presentation on the depiction of women and gender stereotype the in African media and society.Vasumathi Rao, assistant professor, Department of Media Studies, St Thomas College of Arts and Science, presented a paper on a comparative study of internet use among homemakers and working women.The portrayal of women, not just in the media industry, but also in academics was another important topic of discussion and objective of the conference.“The aim is to sensitise the participating students on the portrayal of women in the present education system as well,” explained Hema Malini.The conference, that took place in the college premises, had a panel discussion on depiction of women in film on the final day.The discussion not only saw a lot of enthusiastic participation from the audience, but also witnessed various important issues that were brought up.first published:August 28, 2012, 07:45 ISTlast updated:August 28, 2012, 07:45 IST
