New Delhi: Delhi has reported this season's first dengue death, with an 18-year old succumbing to the mosquito borne disease last week, said official reports on Tuesday.

The girl, a resident of Jafrabad in north-east Delhi, died at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital on July 21. The death certificate states the cause of her demise is dengue shock syndrome.

According to a relative of the girl, she was admitted to the Delhi government's Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital after showing dengue symptoms like fever and vomiting. She tested positive for the disease.

"She was shifted to LNJP Hospital on the night of July 20 where she died the next morning," the relative said.

Last year, the city saw a staggering 15,867 dengue cases, the worst in 20 years with the disease claiming 60 lives, as per municipal reports.
