New Delhi: Telecom entrepreneur Rajiv Chandrashekar on Tuesday scored an impressive victory over leading writer U R Ananthamurthy in Karnataka and cross-voting by West Bengal's ruling Left Front BJP and rebel BSP MLAs in Uttar Pradesh marked biennial Rajya Sabha elections in the three states.
The outcome of the 22 seats in the three states went along the expected line and saw the election of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan and senior BJP leaders Kalraj Mishra and Vinay Katiyar and Samajwadi Party leader Jyaneshwar Mishra among others.
In a keenly watched contest for the fourth seat, Chandrasekhar, an independent backed by Karnataka's ruling BJP-JD(S) coalition, secured the highest number of 57 votes who contested as an independent backed by Congress in what was billed as a local versus "outsider" battle.
Rajasekhara Murthy of JD (S) Rahman Khan K B Shanappa of BJP were also elected, as expected.
In West Bengal, four Left Front nominees--three of CPI(M) and one belonging to Forward Bloc and a Trinamool Congress nominee won the elections to five vacant seats to the Rajya Sabha.
While cross voting from the Left Front MLAs did not alter the expected results, it helped Trinamool candidate Mukul Roy secure the highest number of votes--56.
The four LF candidates who emerged victorious are former Lok Sabha member Moinul Hassan Ahamed, central CITU leader Tapan Sen and senior leader Saman Pathak from the Darjeeling hills (all CPI(M)) and Barun Mukherjee of Forward Bloc.
