ALAPPUZHA: The villagers of Thakazhi, the birthplace of novelist Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, are all set to celebrate his birth centenary, which falls on April 17. The writer’s home Sankaramangalam, which is now under the Cultural Department, has been spruced up  for the purpose. The memorial of the novelist and his smriti mandapom were given a fresh coat of paint and lighting arrangements. The Thakazhi Smaraka Samiti is organising the celebrations.Various programmes have been planned as part of the celebration. A logo of the celebration will be released in the first week of February, said samiti secretary Sreekumar Valiyamadom. A seminar on the short stories of the writer will be held in 20 schools in the district. The first seminar will be held on January 31 at the Thakazhi UP School, where the master storyteller studied.The samiti has also decided to conduct caricature and essay-writing competitions for school and college students, Sreekumar said. A debate on the novels of Thakazhi will also be organised in 20 libraries in the district.A book exhibition and literary festival will be held at Shankaramangalam from April 10 to 17.A play based on the novel ‘Randidangazhi’ by Kannur Sangachethana will be staged as part of the festival. Presentation of folk songs and other literary programmes will be held, Sreekumar said.Madhu and Sheela, who played the lead roles in ‘Chemeen’, will be honoured on the occasion.
