KOCHI: Football is a game of emotion and passion, be it an international, national, college or even a local tournament. 'Goal 2012', the inter-collegiate tournament organised by The New Indian Express, is no different.Agony, smile, disappointment, hope and action, every feeling has a place here. It proves that football has not lost its heart in Kerala. After the completion of Group A matches, the tournament has brought to fore some hidden talents. Faizal Rahman of Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, has found a niche among the strikers. His hat-trick against St Xavier’s College, Thumba, was good enough to help him clinch the top-scorer title. Shameer, another Kerala Varma striker, though is yet to score a goal, has attracted football lovers with his skill and tricky passes. He was the brain behind half of the goals scored by Kerala Varma.Moses Antony, the goal keeper of St Xavier’s College, Thumba, emerged the saviour. He has donned two roles - the goal keeper and the captain of the team- successfully. His talent won him the hearts of football lovers, team mates and even the coaches of opponent teams. “His anticipation and timing are excellent, he is one of most promising young goal keepers in the state,” said Kerala Varma College coach Narayana Menon.Rakesh R of St Xavier’s is also a promising player. He scored a hat-trick against MES, Mampad, in their first league match. “This is his first year with the college team and you can expect more from him in the coming years,” coach George Thomas said. SN College, Kannur, is the only team which has adopted a defensive football. Injuries of their key strikers have forced them to go for a defensive game. However, in their last match in the group, they have compensated for it with two goals. At the same time, Kerala Varma, St Xavier’s and MES Mampad have exhibited some fine examples of attacking football.
