New Delhi: At the New York premiere of 'The Great Gatsby', the noise went up for a moment and the US media was left wondering if Leonardo DiCaprio had come, but it was actually Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The crowd's cheers were overwhelming, says Big B.
"Back from 'The Great Gatsby' premiere and has to be said... the EF (extended family) was the main attraction. Simply superb! American media, fans, security in shock. Thank you my ED, and thank you to those that cheered their lungs out. US media thought Leonardo had come, when noise went up," Big B tweeted post his 'fantastic' experience.
Australian director Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby' is only the latest in a series of screen adaptations of F. Scott Fitzgerald's book. From a silent version to, of course, the famous film starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, the novel has had several cinematic renditions.
The first attempt to bring the book on silver screen was by director Herbert Brenon in 1926. The movie was a silent film starring Warner Baxter, Lois Wilson and Neil Hamilton in lead roles. The movie was 'rotten', said Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of Scott Fitzgerald. However, the prints of the movie were lost later and no archives are said to survive, reports telegraph.co.uk.
The next onscreen adaptation of the book came in 1945 with director Elliott Nugent wielding the megaphone. The film stars Alan Ladd, Betty Field, Macdonald Carey, Ruth Hussey, and Barry Sullivan.
The third adaptation took place in 1974 with director Jack Clayton bringing it on the silver screen. It was a star studded affair with Robert Redford in the title role of Jay Gatsby, Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Bruce Dern, Karen Black, Scott Wilson.
Redford was the world's biggest movie star then, and Francis Ford Coppola, a director to reckong with, had written the script, reports telegraph.co.uk.
Last but not the least was the 2000 version directed by Robert Markowitz, who cast film stars Toby Stephens, Mira Sorvino, Paul Rudd and Martin Donovan in prominent roles.
All the four adaptation of the book were presented with the title "The Great Gatesby". However, except the 1974 version, none of them could replicate the success of the novel.
Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gasby' stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Isla Fisher, Toby Maguire, Carrey Mulligan in the lead roles.
Carey Mulligan never aimed to play 'beautiful' characters, such as the glamorous Daisy Buchanan in 'The Great Gatsby'.
The 27-year-old portrays Buchanan in the big-screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald novel 'The Great Gatsby' and found herself in awe of the stunning costumes.
"I've never aspired to play a character that was beautiful. I've never played a character that had to be very pretty before! The costumes were beautiful," contactmusic.com quoted Mulligan as saying.
"Like, in the first scene, I'm wearing a ball gown. In the book, I think it's just described as a white dress but they thought it'd be fun for Daisy to wear a ball gown for no reason, in the middle of the day - just because she can."
"I was wearing millions of dollars' worth of diamonds. I've never worn anything that expensive before," she added.
The film opened the Cannes International Film Festival. Let's see whether it impresses the Indian audience or not. (With inputs from IANS)
