New Delhi: A notorious thief, who had stolen over 1,000 vehicles in his criminal career of 32 years, has been once again arrested for stealing cars in the capital to fund his craving for drugs, police said on Wednesday.

Nabi Hussain, 50, and his accomplice Abid, 25, were arrested near the CGO Complex area in Lodhi Colony on Tuesday evening. Four cars and five motorcycles were recovered from them.

The police said they also recovered some narcotics from Hussain, a resident of Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, presently staying in the Jama Masjid area of New Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) HGS Dhaliwal said special teams were formed to nab the auto lifters after a sudden rise in the theft of old Maruti cars in various parts of the capital, especially in Lodhi Colony area in the last eight months.

“Hussain in his interrogation said he was involved in more than 1,000 cases of auto thefts in 32 years. Hussain started his criminal career in 1976 when he was 18. He had been arrested several times in the past and spent a good amount of time in jail,” Dhaliwal said.

Hussain had been convicted in more than 20 cases in the past.

The police said Hussain in his earlier days used to steal all types of cars, which his gang members Mohammed Qayum and others would dispose off in western Uttar Pradesh. But for the last few years he preferred to work alone to avoid being caught.

Dhaliwal said Hussain got addicted to drugs in recent times and to fulfil his craving for drugs he started stealing old Maruti cars.

Police have also recovered a master key from Hussian using which he used to unlock Maruti cars.

“He specifically targeted old models of Maruti cars as the master key was specifically designed for the purpose. The Lodhi Colony area houses a number of government offices and vital installations, and it was easy for him to steal the cars as the office-goers usually enter their offices in the morning and come out only in the evening,” Dhaliwal said.
