One of the greatest contributions of Buddhism to the world are some great architectural monasteries, known for their spirituality. Some ancient Buddhist stupas and monuments can be found around the Andhra Pradesh village of Salihundam. It is situated on the southern bank of the Vamsadhara River, 18 km from Srikakulam town. It was called Salivatika, which means rice emporium. Many have called it alyapetika, meaning box of bones or remains. There are many Buddhist stupas and a huge monastic complex on a hill amidst beautiful surroundings.
Salihundam was first discovered in 1919 by Gidugu Venkata Rama Murthy. Excavations have uncovered four stupas, a Chaityagriha, architectural objects, and many sculptures depicting the three stages of Buddhism – Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Idols of Tara and Mareechi from the 12th century BC have been found at this place. From here, Buddhism spread to Sumatra and other far-eastern countries like Thailand and Cambodia. The place also has a Kala Chakra, several rooms used as kitchens, a meditation room and a Buddhist Stupa. The main stupa on top of the hill is 46 feet in diameter. The Mahavihara Sali-petaka here has an interesting, swastika-shaped entrance, possibly indicating the spread of Buddhism to Southeast Asia.
Four stupas, Relic caskets and architectural shrines were discovered during digging performed by the state authorities. All of the remnants were built between the 2nd century and 12th century, reflecting different times of Buddhism. In addition to this, the sculptures of Mareechi and Tara were also found from this notable site. It is indeed one of the main Buddhist excavations standing as evidence that the religion thrived at this place during the 2nd to 3rd century. It is certainly the best place to pay a visit while on a tour to Salihundam.
Salihundam is also surrounded by some other attractions like the Kalingapatnam Beach, Arasavalli Sun Temple and Srikurmam Temple.
