In our country, women can turn their arts and crafts skills into successful business ventures. In an exclusive report by Local18, the agency talks about a woman from Tamil Nadu, who chose to start a business in a variety of agarbattis from the comfort and safety of her home.

The woman is named Kanchana, who is a resident of Chinnamanur, which is located in the district of Theni, Tamil Nadu. She is a seller of agarbatti and incense cups, which she creates from her own home.

According to the information given, Kanchana learned the art of manufacturing agarbattis from the KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission) office in Uttar Pradesh. Now, she is working as an agarbatti-making trainer in Tamil Nadu.

She frequently visits schools, colleges and other educational institutions, to teach the students about agarbatti production and how to create it. As an agarbatti manufacturer herself, she produces around 19 types of agarbattis and cup incense from home and sells it across the whole state. According to Kanchana, she can earn an income of around Rs 20,000 per month, from her business.

India is a place of worship and spirituality, with a considerable demand for agarbattis and other incense items. So, naturally, our country is listed as the biggest producer of incense sticks in the world, along with being the best. According to a website, India exports agarbattis to more than 150 countries. It includes countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Nigeria, which are reportedly the top markets. Other countries usually sell unscented incense sticks while India is popular for its scented versions. A consumer can buy it in different shapes, colours and fragrances. The varieties could include sandalwood, lavender, rose and mogra among many other options.
